about

Rui Bonito is a Porto born musician and sound artist.
Started studying the drums at the Jazz school and playing in bands in a variety of genres since his early teens.
Always being fascinated with electronics and how the records he listened were made, soon started to do his first recording experiments, using cheap microphones and cassette recorders. When he got his first computer and realized about the possibilities of the early daws and trackers, he started to compose his first tracks. Since then he studied Audiovisuals and worked as a sound engineer, along with developing his own sound including using intruments (played in a non traditional way) such as Guitars, Flute, Trumpet, Keys, Percussions.
Presently he is in constant experimentation, recording new sounds, and composing for most of the time.

Processes and gear involved.

Land:
For this piece I created a choir recording my voice multiple times, recorded a guitar track with a diy fuzz pedal, pitched down using reel to reel tape machine and played it back to the computer on two separate mono channels one at each time.
Some concrete sounds were used, recordings of objects and an acoustic guitar played with a cymbal and also a drone and chords made from a pipe organ sample, sent through a guitar amp with distortion mic'd with two different microphones

Gas Clouds:
It all started from a long drone I recorded years ago, I pitched it down with the tape recorder, send it back to the computer and added some reverb. Then I recorded the guitar, stretched it on Ableton Live (with the texture algorithm) and send it through a guitar amp with distortion back to the computer via two different mics. Some tape sounds were created spinning the reels with the hands. Finally a 8th note bass arpeggio was created using the ARP 2600 soft synth.

Slow Gulls:
I had a few synth lines recorded at some time ago with a Moog Prodigy. I recorded some of them on tape and played it back to the computer on three different layers played at different speeds and through a guitar amplifier with some distortion. The bass synth was made with the Tassman modular soft synth.

From The Void:
All the recordings on this track are improvisations made at first take. First I recorded a guitar track with fuzz and a software leslie effect in stereo, then send it to tape on two separate mono channels (recorded and played one at each time) pitched it down and send it back to the computer. Also a second guitar was recorded with delay and again pitched up and down with the same tape process. Then I recorded multiple tracks of my voice with delay. The percussion was created at the last stage using the Tassman modular soft synth. Also a subtile short decay kick drum was added.
