about

One of my earliest memories is one summer in my parents basement, listening to a record/book of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine and being both electrified and terrified at the same time. This was one of the first experiences I had of how sound can thrill and entertain. As I grew I discovered the joys of Horror soundtracks, all sorts of Electronic, Industrial, Improvised & Ambient music, Music Concrete & a whole host of other oddball sounds.

The forelight project seeks to reflect these influences, involving a process of recycling found sound, whether archived material from my home studio, re-textured third party sounds or field recordings. The aims are to create textured sonic pieces that absorb and transport the listener into an altered, abstracted sound environment.

Release notes:
Track One: The piece begins with a drone, a subtle ambiance. Scattered textures of granular processed sounds. A smash of glass among the stillness. Pitched down singing bowls add a tremor to the latter parts of the track. A slight melody creeps in for moments until it subsides into the bass drones.

Track Two: A digital/ analog interface in two parts. Starting with a collage of singing bowls, crudely played percussion and a synthetic drone, the piece then turns into a modular improvisation, reprocessed and granularized within a digital framework. Random patterns are broken down and then replaced in new forms.

(Featuring Matthew Northcott)

Track Three: Digital separation. A rush of sound time-stretched and falling apart at the seams.

Track Four: Angelic voices caught and frozen in a digital landscape, like butterfly wings in techno-organic amber. The program jitters and distort's the piece transforming it from simple beauty to some strange facsimile of something beautiful.

Track Five: After the bustle a calm. Simple notes and a washed out drone carry this piece.

Track Six: An interlude. A remix of my own work. A captured fragment repeated.

Track Seven: Saturated noise and simple melodies. The sound of late night train journeys home and a little bit of melancholy.
